Pediatric Floor

The Pediatric Floor Team is composed of one PL-3, one PL-2 and two to three interns. They admit patients, formulate management for patient care and are also involved in various pediatric procedures. Daily progress notes and discharge summaries are expected of the resident in charge of the patient. Rounds are conducted every day with the Service attending at 10AM. There is also a Teaching Attending and Pediatric Cardiology Attending who discuss inpatient topics with the residents. Residents work with highly skilled pediatric nurses, Child Life Staff and social workers. Our residents are also involved in teaching third and fourth year medical students from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and various osteopathic medical schools rotating in the department.

Family Health Center Clinic

A resident is supervised by one of our general pediatric faculty members in assessing and managing a variety of ambulatory care patients. All residents have assigned days for their Continuity Clinic where they follow a number of patients for their regular well check-ups. Residents also participate in our pediatric obesity program, home visitation program and mental health screening program.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine

One resident is assigned per month in the pediatric ER. This rotation is supervised by a pediatric board certified/fellowship trained ER faculty member. Residents are in charge of assessing and formulating immediate management for patients as well as performing various procedures.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Two residents rotate in the 21 bed NICU per month. They work with eight in house neonatology faculty members, two nurse practitioners, highly trained nurses and respiratory therapists. Residents admit critically ill newborns and perform admission work-ups and procedures. Rounds are conducted in the morning with the NICU team. Residents take part in all critical deliveries.

Regular Nursery

A resident is assigned to the regular nursery each month. Daily rounds are conducted with the service attending and progress notes are expected of the resident. In addition, the resident is in charge of arranging transfer of babies who need closer observation and further management to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

A resident is in charge of our 6-bed intensive care unit. Rounds with the in-house PICU faculty member are conducted at least once a day. All residents perform critical procedures supervised by faculty members. The PICU resident is also in charge of contacting our transport team and arranging transfers of patients to and from another hospital.

Community Rotation

A resident spends one month on their community rotation supervised by a pediatric attending. The rotation allows the resident to be exposed to various community activities at the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS), school based and child care programs, foster homes, chronic care facilities and different local private practice offices and school based clinics. This rotation will also allow residents to participate in legislative advocacy programs in Trenton, New Jersey.

Adolescent Medicine

A resident spends one month on their adolescent medicine rotation supervised by a board certified adolescent medicine faculty member. In the adolescent medicine rotation, the resident meets with the faculty member to discuss all core aspects of adolescent medicine. The rotation also includes activities at the juvenile detention center, sports medicine clinic, OB/GYN clinic, Planned Parenthood and the mental health crisis center. The resident can also do inpatient consultations on adolescent patients.

Developmental Pediatrics

This is a one month rotation supervised by two fellowship trained developmental pediatricians. In this rotation, the resident actively participates with these faculty members and child psychologists in ITAP (Infant-Toddler Assessment Program) and other behavioral and developmental clinics. Since the director of this rotation recently received a 1 million dollar grant to create an autism center, residents will have multiple opportunities to evaluate children with autism and special needs.

Electives

Residents have 1 month block rotations of electives. Most pediatric subspecialty electives are offered within our hospital. All PL-2's will participate in an inpatient hematology/oncology elective rotation at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Additionally, residents have the opportunity to do Pediatric Nephrology and Pediatric Rheumatology at our hospital and/or Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Pediatric Genetics is also offered at either Robert Wood Johnson Medical School or at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland.
