The Day of Surgery

When we speak to you the day before the surgery, we will tell you where to go the day of the surgery.

On the day of your child's surgery, please make sure to bring the following information with you for check-in and registration:

  • Photo identification (for parent/guardian)
  • Insurance Card
  • Referral, if required by insurance
  • Guardianship papers (if not the parent of the patient)
Please note: If you are a guardian, please contact us in advance for additional paperwork that may need to be completed.

The day of surgery, we ask that you do not bring any other children with you to the hospital. Make sure you bring some activities to keep your child busy, including a favorite blanket or stuffed animal.

Once registration is complete, you and your child will be taken to a waiting room. From here, you will both be taken to an examination room where your child will be changed into a hospital gown and receive an identification bracelet. A brief examination will be conducted.

You will meet the anesthesiologist who will discuss the way the anesthesia for the surgery will be administered.

Finally, the surgeon will meet with you and your child to review any last minute details.

The Operating Room

If requested, we allow one parent to stay with their child in the operating room, until the anesthesia takes effect. However, there may be instances where this is not possible, and the parents must remain outside.

If you are allowed in the operating room, you will be provided with cover-up materials to wear. You will be allowed to stay with your child until the anesthesia takes effect, and your child is asleep. At that point, you will be instructed to wait within the Parent's Waiting Room until after the surgery.

Once the surgery is complete, the surgeon will come meet you in the Waiting Room to provide you an update on your child's condition.
