Neptune, NJ -  Meridian Health, a leading health care provider in New Jersey will be showcasing its innovative digital health technology solutions at the Lunch at Piero's media event on Monday, January 7 and Tuesday, January 8, during the 2008 International CES - the world’s largest consumer technology trade show in Las Vegas. A hospital and health care services provider, Meridian is extending the role of traditional health care, by applying emerging technologies in the clinical setting. Through partnerships with many leading technology innovators, including Intel and Phillips Medical, Meridian is actively piloting new uses for leading edge digital, consumer, and sensory technologies, to build an electronic health information bridge between patients, their physicians, and hospitals.

New Jersey’s Monmouth and Ocean Counties, where Meridian is the largest health care provider, is home to one of the fastest growing senior populations in the nation. Meridian recognized the needs of the aging population early, and has become a nationally recognized leader in exploring and adopting innovative and useful technology solutions in the hospital and in the home. By partnering with technology companies Meridian is taking a leadership role in demonstrating how home based technologies can create a safer and more clinically efficient system for the nation’s daunting future health care demands.

“We are seeing many challenges and strains not only on our local health care delivery system, but in the home as well, as family members cope with the role of caregiver to aging family members,” says John Lloyd, FACHE, president of Meridian Health. “Over the last few years Meridian has been exploring technology options for the home to provide families and physicians with innovative and practical solutions to help manage their health care needs.”

Creating a health care system with technology that provides seamless connectivity from hospital, to the physician, to the home, to even the patient themselves, will enable seniors and their family caregivers to more independently manage their health and wellness in more effective ways. With more aging adults living longer with a higher level of mobility, the ability for seniors to remain safely independent and in the home is one of the needs currently being addressed through Meridian’s efforts.

Some of the emerging technologies that Meridian will showcase are:
•· A new type of blood pressure sensor built directly into a standard PC optical mouse.
•· Glowing caps for medication bottles with built in feedback loops programmed by caregivers to remind people when to take their medications. The caps track when medication is taken based on sensors built into the cap and the system will provide reports to both caregivers and physicians summarizing medication compliance.
•· GPS enabled sneakers with an emergency response service catering to the needs of those with Alzheimer’s Disease and memory impairment.
•· The Meridian Pharmacology Institute – An innovative concept in the hospital industry focused on developing and implementing new models of pharmaceutical use and monitoring. As part of the virtual Institute in the hospital and in the home, pharmacists offer Medication Therapy Management to various populations, and through the use of “connected” glucometers, help monitor and enhance patients’ understanding of appropriate drug use; increase adherence with prescribed medications; facilitate collaboration between pharmacists and prescribers; and improve the detection of adverse events.
•· Meridian will be displaying a body sensor which calculates fitness statistics and calories burned. The body sensor is a wearable sensor which allows Meridian Life fitness staff to remotely monitor member activity and to create custom home-based fitness and wellness programs.
