Pediatric Surgeon from K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital
Travels to Palestine on Medical Mission

Neptune, NJ - For nine days in June, Saad A Saad, M.D., FACS, FAAP, pediatric surgeon, Surgeon-en-Chief and Co-Medical Director of K. Hovnanian Children's Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and Khalid Morsi, M.D., anesthesiologist at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, traveled to Palestine on a humanitarian medical mission.

While in Palestine, Dr. Saad screened ninety children, selecting the most complex cases at Ramallah General Hospital in Palestine.  With the help of Dr. Morsi, Amal Atieh Jubran, R.N., operating room nurse from San Diego, California and two Palestinian pediatric surgeons, Dr. Saad performed sixteen major operations; each surgery lasting approximately three hours.  The children selected had extensive health issues including: chest wall deformities, liver and lung tumors, and birth defects, such as complicated gastrointestinal anomalies.  Due to the lack of medical care, many of these health issues had plagued the children since birth.

"Being born in  Palestine, although I am an US citizen for about 40 years, it is important to me to find time each year to travel back to my birth place and provide care to the children that need it most," says Dr. Saad.  "Our annual mission has helped hundreds of children and local doctors who do not have access to the advanced medical technology and trainings I have been lucky enough to receive."

Months before his yearly visits to Palestine, there are more than twenty social workers from the area who travel throughout Palestine and Israel to find children most in need of care.  Many of the families travel hours to see Dr. Saad and his team when they arrive.

This humanitarian mission was financed by the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (P.C.R.F.).  P.C.R.F. is a non-political, non-profit organization based in Akron, Ohio dedicated to fighting the medical and humanitarian crisis facing children throughout the Middle East.  They are also supported by Jersey Shore University Medical Center.  The PCRF organization helps locate free medical care for children from the area who are unable to get the necessary and specialized treatment in their homeland.
