Pediatric Palliative Care

Pediatric Palliative Care

When a child is diagnosed with a serious, life-limiting medical condition, it is more important than ever that the whole family has access to the best support and care available.

The Pediatric Palliative Care Team at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital is a multidisciplinary team that empowers families to make decisions that support their values, traditions and culture all while enhancing their child’s quality of life. Together, members of the Pediatric Palliative Care Team take the time to get to know both family and child to develop a specialized plan of care.

Our pediatric palliative care team may include:

  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Pharmacists
  • Spiritual care
  • Child life specialists
  • Social workers
  • Psychologists
  • Case managers
  • Dietitians

Services Provided

The Pediatric Palliative Care Team works beside your child’s primary medical team to provide:

  • Comprehensive pain relief and symptom management
  • Guidance with difficult and complex treatment options
  • Patient, sibling and family support
  • Communication and coordination of care
  • Assistance for patients, parents and caregivers in decision making and planning for the future
  • End of life care/bereavement counseling

Children living with serious illness often experience physical and emotional stress related to their disease. This is also common for the parents, siblings and other family members who face the task of making difficult decisions. Palliative care is that extra layer of support within your care team that can assist you with developing a unique plan of care that will address everything from symptom management and psychosocial family support to coordination of care in and out of the hospital setting.

Our goal is to listen to the wants and needs of the whole family, and to achieve an improved quality of life for all.

Liam’s Room

Liam’s Room is located in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. The room has a home-like atmosphere and features many amenities that help pediatric palliative care patients and their families feel more comfortable during an extended hospital stay. It was created in loving memory of Liam Hayden McNamara, who passed away at 16 months from an incurable neurological condition called Lissencephaly (Miller-Dieker Syndrome). The newly renovated room contains typical amenities that a child’s bedroom at home might offer, including bright colors, a video game and movie system, and bookshelf. A sleeper sofa, comfortable quilts and pillows, a private bathroom and beach-themed artwork supplement the room for the family’s comfort. Learn more.
