For a Former Football Player, Knee Replacement Was the Right Call
Because he was used to calling the
shots as the president of a bank
and from his days as a quarterback,
Bob Davis of Jackson knew surgery was
fast becoming the only option to treat his
knee problems. Playing golf — and even
just standing up for a few minutes — had
become too painful.
Bob was accustomed to pain
in his knee since he had hurt it
in a football game 40 years ago
— and nine years of professional
football and a very active lifestyle
in the meantime hadn't helped
matters. "Bob had developed
post-traumatic arthritis," says
Arthur Mark, M.D., a board certified
orthopedic surgeon at Jersey
Shore University Medical Center.
"His was a severe case — the
cartilage was gone, and the thickened
bone ends were rubbing
directly against each other."
Bob knew Jersey Shore was
a local, high-quality option for
his knee procedure. His son was
born there and both his parents
had surgeries there, but he was
also familiar with many of the
orthopedic surgeons at Jersey
Shore from his football career. Bob did
his research, talked over his options with
friends and family, and decided to interview
Dr. Mark.
"During my initial appointment, I liked
Dr. Mark's candor," says Bob. "While he
had a lot of confidence and a positive
outlook, he also gave me a very detailed explanation of what to expect. I trusted
him and felt comfortable that this was my
best option."
Dr. Mark decided that a total knee
replacement was required to restore
proper function and to reduce the pain.
"We do this by implanting a new joint
surface and removing the bone spurs,"
says Dr. Mark. "This is done through a
technique with minimal blood loss and
small incisions, creating less pain and a
lower chance for infection."
"Everything happened the way Dr. Mark
said it would," says Bob. "And the nurses
made me very comfortable. Now I'm
working really hard with my physical
therapy. I go three times a week, and I
haven't used a cane since the first week
following surgery."
Recovery is not an easy process,
but Dr. Mark and his team have been
excellent. I never have questions when I
leave the office because they tell me exactly
what to expect. I really look forward to
playing golf and walking on the boardwalk
again."
