Message to the Community

It’s not news to anyone who lives in Monmouth or
Ocean counties that New Jersey is home to people
from many cultures, races, and ethnic groups.
What may be eye-opening, however, is that even
today differences exist in disease prevalence, health outcomes,
and access to health care among different groups
of people in a single community. In short, the diversity
that makes New Jersey so unique also can present
numerous challenges — in both language and culture
— to accessing and receiving quality health care.
To help eliminate health disparities in our communities,
Meridian Health is marking September — New
Jersey’s Minority and Multicultural Health Month
— with special programs to increase access to quality
care among our minority populations. Turn to page 22
to learn about a special two-hour seminar, "It Takes
a Village to Address Health Disparities," in which
Meridian Health physicians will establish a community
dialogue on this important health issue. You’ll also
notice on that page that Meridian Health is offering
a number of free screenings throughout the month to
encourage everyone to stay on top of their health.
Meridian Health has been proud to offer these
free health programs as a special benefit for you. I
hope you take advantage of them by registering at the
Meridian Health Line or logging on to our events page
at MeridianHealth.com.
Sincerely,

John K. Lloyd, FACHE
