Advanced Cancer Technology Comes to Jersey Shore

Advanced Cancer Technology Comes to Jersey Shore
"Precision is of the utmost importance," says Dr. Jonathan H. Briggs.

Jersey Shore’s Radiation Oncology Center recently received a major renovation to up-grade and enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic services offered to cancer patients throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties. Here’s a look at some of the services offered:

Linear Accelerator Room
The new linear accelerator room features intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with respiratory gating. One of the latest advances available in cancer treatment, this technology can pinpoint and destroy cancer cells without harming healthy tissue, all while compensating for the natural movement of a patient’s breathing.

CT Simulator
This simulator allows physicians to use 3-D planning to map out a patient’s course of treatment for even greater accuracy. The system provides a substantial improvement in image quality, and patients no longer have to be transported to Radiology for CT scans prior to receiving their radiation treatments. In addition, while conventional simulation takes one to three hours, Jersey Shore physicians can now plan precise treatments with the new simulator within 15 to 30 minutes and with much greater comfort for the patient.

High-Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy
This is another means of delivering radiation in concentrated dosese directly to the tumor site. Also, Varian PortalVision is a digital system used to monitor and verify the planned treatment beams even while treatment is being delivered.

"In addition to making the process of care easier for our patients, all of our upgrades focus on delivering high doses of radiation to tumors with pinpoint accuracy while preserving healthy tissue," says Jonathan H. Briggs, M.D., director of Radiation Oncology at Jersey Shore. "When you’re treating cancer, precision is of the utmost importance. We pride ourselves on providing the very best care available to the more than 7,000 cancer patients we care for each year."
