Pick Out The Perfect Cane
A cane can offer extra support and balance. But using the wrong cane can actually raise the risk of falling.
To choose a cane, consider these facts:
- Wooden canes are inexpensive and lightweight but can’t be adjusted.
- Aluminum canes are more expensive, but you can adjust their length.
- An offset cane has an extra-wide curve at the top, allowing you to put weight on it.
- A quad cane, with four points on the bottom, supports even more of your weight. It also can stand on its own to free your hands when needed.
- What’s the right length? When you stand up straight and relax your arm, the top of the cane should reach the crease of your wrist.
