Suicide Signals: What You Need To Know

About twice as many Americans die from suicide as from HIV/AIDS each year. If you suspect that someone is considering suicide, watch for these signs:

  • Verbal clues, such as "You’d be better off without me," or "Maybe I won’t be around anymore"

  • Expressions of hopelessness or helplessness

  • Idealization of suicide or obsession with death
  • Significant personality changes, including depression, moodiness, or aggression

  • Lack of interest in the future

Take any of these signals seriously. Help the person seek immediate care from a doctor, therapist, or clergy member. Do not try to counsel the person yourself, and don’t promise to keep their feelings a secret. If you believe the situation is an emergency, call 911 immediately and do not leave the person alone.
