Scents and Sounds Soothe Dementia Symptoms

Depression. . .pacing. . .sleep problems. These are just some of the troubles affecting people with dementia.

Dementia refers to a group of memory, personality, and behavior problems caused by changes in the brain.

The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. Other triggers include poor nutrition, some medicines, and head injuries.

Some dementia sufferers may benefit from alternative treatments, according to recent research. "In conjunction with physician orders, there are some techniques that have been shown to have a positive impact on dementia sufferers," says Paul P. Lee, M.D., a boardcertified geriatrician on staff at Ocean Medical Center. The following are designed to have a soothing effect and are generally well received. If you have a loved one with dementia, consider these soothing findings:

  • A light massage might encourage relaxation.
  • Inhaling the scent of lemon balm oil or lavender oil can lessen irritability.
  • Listening to music may lift one's spirits.
  • Sitting in front of a special light box for 30 to 60 minutes each morning might help him or her sleep better.

Ask your doctor about these special devices.
