Heart Attack Symptoms

For women, heart attack symptoms are not always like those for men. Symptoms may include:

  • Chest discomfort

  • Pain or pressure spreading to the jaw, neck, shoulders, or arm

  • Shortness of breath

  • Nausea

  • Sweating

  • Indigestion or gas-like pain

  • Dizziness

  • Unexplained weakness or fatigue

  • Discomfort or pain between the shoulder blades

  • A sense of impending doom

If you experience these symptoms, follow these instructions:

  • Take one adult-strength (325 mg) tablet of uncoated aspirin.

  • If you have prescribed nitroglycerin, place one tablet under your tongue immediately. Take a second tablet if the discomfort does not go away in five minutes. Take a third tablet after five more minutes if the discomfort still hasn't gone away. If the symptoms do stop, call your doctor.

  • Call 9-1-1 for emergency transportation if symptoms continue for more than 15 minutes.
