Why Give?

Tackle Kids Cancer

Major gifts to Tackle Kids Cancer surpassed the $500,000 level for 2018 thanks to recent donations. Paul and Enilda Sansone (Sansone Foundation) and Food Circus Supermarkets (trustee Phil Scaduto) donated $100,000 each to support the pediatric oncology initiative, Tackle Kids Cancer (TKC). In addition, foundation trustee John Reinhardt and his wife, Dawn, continued their long-standing support of the children’s hospital with a gift of $50,000 to support the program. The James F. Ackerman Federation also made a $300,000 pledge to TKC.

Children’s “Dream Racer” Unveiled at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital

A “Children’s Dream Racer” (CDR) – a child-sized version of a NASCAR race car – was donated to K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital by the New Jersey Association of Health Underwriters (NJAHU). Built by retired NASCAR car builder and CDR founder Mark “Smitty” Smith, the car is made with the same materials as a real NASCAR racer and features a flat panel TV, CD/DVD player, PlayStation® and IV stand/oxygen bottle trunk. The racer will help keep pediatric patients entertained during their outpatient visits.

Helping Children and Families Live to the Fullest

Having provided initial funding to support the launch of a pediatric palliative care program in 2016, Barry and Carol Weshnak are grateful for the number of children and their families who have been touched by the program – nearly 165 patients treated, and over 650 consults made by the program’s care team since its inception. Emphasizing that palliative care is not about dying, rather it is about helping children and their families live to the fullest while facing complex medical problems, the Weshnaks have made a donation of $350,000 toward the continued growth of pediatric palliative care at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Robert Sweeney, chair of Emergency Medicine at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and his wife, Kathleen, made a $30,000 gift to support outpatient pediatric services in HOPE Tower. This is their latest gift in a 26-year history of supporting K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital.

Spirit of Children Program Supports Child Life Program

For the fourth consecutive year, K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital has been selected as a charitable partner of Spirit Halloween’s Spirit of Children program, which provides fun and funding to its partner hospitals during the Halloween season and throughout the year. Funds raised from this program benefit the children’s hospital by providing Child Life funding for therapy programs such as art and music, as well as the purchase of educational items and toys used for distraction during medical procedures. Spirit Halloween’s recent gift, which represents collections during the 2018 Halloween season, totaled $73,763, bringing the organization’s overall donations to K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital to more than $200,000.

Annual Food Circus Checkout Promotion Benefits K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital

Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation trustee Phil Scaduto and his Food Circus Supermarket grocery stores held their annual checkout promotion to benefit K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, raising $60,000. This year’s proceeds will benefit the hospital’s pediatric palliative care program, fulfilling their pledge commitment to that program. In 2020, Food Circus will conduct its fundraising drive to benefit children in our community who are battling cancer and our Tackle Kids Cancer initiative.
