Booker Health Sciences Library
The Booker Health Sciences Library
The Booker Health Sciences Library was formed from the collections of the former Medical Library and the Ann May School of Nursing Library to provide resources in print, non-print and electronic formats to meet the information, education and research needs of the Hackensack Meridian Health community, including physicians, house staff, nurses, other health care professionals, managers, administrators, employees, students, patients and their families. The Booker Health Sciences Library is open to the public and includes a consumer health collection, featuring a home delivery service.
The Booker Health Sciences Library was made possible through generous gifts from the Jane H. and J. Marshall Booker Charitable Foundation, the Mildred H. Rosa Charitable Trust, Jean and Don Lass, the Jersey Shore University Medical Center medical/dental staff and the Nurses for Knowledge Campaign.
The collection numbers over 6,800 books, over 1,700 of which are in electronic format as well as over 2,500 journals, 2,300 of which are in electronic format.
There are 13 computers for patron use on a first-come, first-served basis. Each computer has Internet access, bibliographic databases in medicine (MEDLINE), nursing (CINAHL), health administration (HealthSTAR), bioethics, evidence-based medicine, consumer health , Microsoft’s Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheet), PowerPoint (presentation), and UpToDate (clinical decision support software).
In late 2004, the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science awarded the Booker Health Sciences Library housed at Jersey Shore University Medical Center the 2004 Blue Ribbon Consumer Health Information Recognition Award for Libraries.
One of the most unique consumer services offered by the Booker Health Sciences Library is the home delivery program. Simply call, fax, or email the library your consumer health question. In response, the library staff will put together a packet of credible, reliable information and mail it to your home, free of charge. That’s one of the reason’s the library was the only library in New Jersey to earn the 2004 Blue Ribbon Consumer Health Information Recognition Award from the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science.
